DeKalb expecting to measure up to six inches of snow

Today could be a record-setting snowy day in DeKalb, according to one meteorologist.

NIU staff meteorologist Gilbert Sebenste said with La Niña in effect, this has been the eighth-snowiest winter thus far.

“There’s no question we’re going up in rank; we’ll know how much by 9 a.m. [today],” said Sebenste.

Sebenste predicted that DeKalb will receive approximately six inches of snow today from the weather system passing overhead. Currently, this February is tied for fifth place on record with 16.8 inches of snow this month. Should today’s snow equal six inches, this February will break the record set in 1975 of 22.4 inches. Last year’s snow was the third heaviest total for this month, at a total of 18 inches.

Sebenste said temperatures will fall from the 20s to the teens late in the day.
