Things to do on Valentine’s Day

By ANDY MITCHELL

You may have class the next day and you may have homework to catch up on. But other than that, you can’t say there’s nothing to do in DeKalb for Valentine’s Day.

The NIU school of Theatre and Dance Studio Series presents a “Festival of Romantic Comedy” starting tonight and running through Sunday, February 17.

The performance starts at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $5 at the door.

Starbusters is hosting DJs Non-Stop Nick and DJ Vizion. They will be spinning from 9 p.m. until close

The House Cafe is hosting a Valentine’s Day show with indie rock bands Soft, the Patience, the Conductors, Basement Ghost at 8 p.m. Tickets are $6.

We talked with Basement Ghost, aka NIU student Joel Bernhard, about playing on Valentine’s Day.

The Northern Star: Would you say that-

Joel Bernhard: [interrupting] Basement Ghost is for lovers? Yes.

NS: OK then, thanks for finishing the question. If I put one of your songs on a mix CD for my Valentine, what kind of message would that send to him or her?

JB: I’m lost and confused [laughs].

NS: Would you say you’re a good band to see on Valentine’s day?

JB: Well, I am hopeless romantic – emphasis on hopeless. So yes, I suppose.

NS: Are you going to adjust your setlist because of Valentine’s day?

JB: I am. I considered being ironic and playing only depressing songs. I am opening with a deceptively sad song, though.
