Colbert’s book a satirical sensation

By CHRIS KRAPEK

Stephen Colbert’s first crack at literature, “I Am America (And So Can You!),” is one of the most offensive right-wing propaganda-filled books ever written.

It is also one of the most brilliant and downright hilarious political satires that humankind has ever seen.

The political character/pundit known as Stephen Colbert is so conservative that he makes Ann Coulter seem like an anarchist.Throughout the book, it’s hard to distinguish whether or not Stephen Colbert is actually writing as Stephen Colbert the person, or Stephen Colbert the character.

It seems unfathomable that any human being could proclaim that the liberal media controls the wallpaper industry, could call for the promotion of abstinence education amongst animals and find the children’s show “Dora The Explorer” to contain sexual propaganda. Then again, Colbert calls himself a Republican.

The book is a compilation of different issues that plague America with controversy. Race, homosexuality, religion and the liberal media are all brought up. Colbert attacks each issue with his unique sense of humor that has turned him into a political hero and true satirist.

In each chapter, a new issue is tackled with brutal patriotic force. In the chapter “Family,” Colbert proclaims he is against children because he views them as opponents. In “Old People,” he discusses the resemblance of senior citizens to lizards and why social security and retirement are for quitters.

In “Homosexuals,” he states he is perfectly fine with gay men as long as they marry a woman and have kids. “The Lavender Armageddon” of homosexuals taking over America is the biggest threat to our country, Colbert says.

At the end of every chapter, Colbert provides us with a “Fun Zone” to reward the reader for extensive reading. The zones include a “connect the dots” illustration that forms a border along Canada and Mexico, a flow chart to determine if you are homosexual and a maze in which an old man can find happiness by reaching Denny’s, Florida or a bottle of Jack Daniels.

Little details such as margin notes, footnotes and “The Stephen T. Colbert Award for the Literary Excellence” make the book undeniably hilarious.

The “About The Author” section says Stephen Colbert is America, while showing him resembling the Incredible Hulk and jamming an American flag through a bear’s head.

The book is a very easy read that is hard to put down. It will make you laugh out loud at some points and have you scoffing at others. Colbert’s library of opinions and thoughts certainly provides for a much bigger body of work in the future.

“I Am America (And So Can You!)” is the writing of a bigot whose ideas and morals are distasteful and ignorant. Of course, readers cannot and will not take this book seriously, as the neo-conservative is merely a character perpetuated by Colbert.

Colbert’s first book is a humorous and thoroughly satirical debut.
