House Cafe hosts weekly open mic night

Inside the chilly but cozy doors of the House Café, 263 E. Lincoln Highway, NIU students and DeKalb residents alike gathered to listen to their peers at the venue’s weekly Open Mic night.

Every Tuesday at 8 p.m., the House Cafe opens up its stage to the public. Anyone who shows up and signs in is welcome to perform for free, and the open mic offers local artists opportunities to play.

“Some of the best musicians I’ve heard in my life are people that are unknown,” said performer Adam Stratton. “Everyone should support local music.”

Senior geography major, Matthew Hayes, has been performing at the House Café since the fall semester of 2003.

“It’s a good place to hang out,” said Hayes, referring to the House Cafe’s atmosphere. “It’s one of the few places you can just come out and play; the purpose of an open mic is to let anyone play.”

Regardless of venue, everyone agrees that an open mic is an important tool in the beginning of any performer’s career.

“There are a lot of good performers who haven’t broken out of their shell,” said House Cafe barista, Elaine Goodwin. “It’s a good way to test the waters. It’s a good way to get your name out there and get started.”

The House offers an inviting and non-critical environment where performers can practice playing in front of a crowd.

“It’s definitely good for a person who doesn’t have a whole lot of experience playing in public,” Hayes said. “Open mics are generally a good place to get used to it.”

Goodwin said on given nights the venue can host over a dozen performers. However, on Tuesday only six made their way on stage, playing three to four songs each.

Songs ranged from folk music with the aid of both acoustic and electric guitars, to soothing piano sounds.

Lasting about two hours, the performances were varied and never boring. Several artists even requested audience participation, which gave a surge of energy throughout the audience.

Great local music against the backdrop of the House Cafe’s cozy atmosphere and yummy hot chocolate offer a great way to spend a Tuesday night.
