Flood 07: C3 parking lot floods; leaves students stranded

By Ryan Strong

The C3 parking lot behind NIU’s Convocation Center flooded Thursday, leaving some students stranded and their cars submerged.

Shondra Moon, a freshman computer science major, stood watching her car plunge deep into what used to be a parking lot.

Moon was not as upset at her inability to access her car as she was upset at what she believed was a lack of effort on the part of NIU to aid her in retrieving her car.

Moon was one of many students from the residence halls instructed to move their vehicles from the residence hall parking lots to the C3 lot Wednesday night in preparation for move-in day Thursday. The lots were to be cleared to provide easier access to the residence halls for people that were moving in.

Students were summoned via the public address system to the C3 lot Thursday night, where Moon was among many to find their cars under water.

“NIU told me to park here, and look what happened,” she said.

Moon said she realizes that weather is unpredictable, but believes NIU should help students that were affected by the flood.

“I know it’s not [NIU’s] fault, but I think they should help me,” she said.

Ben Kamp, a freshman computer science major, said he did not receive any help from NIU.

“To be honest, I’m upset,” he said. “I don’t know if my car is working or not.”

Moon’s friend, freshman marketing major Chastity Hull, was also upset by the circumstances.

“I think this is horrible,” Hull said. “She was my ride to Wal-Mart.”

The eastern part of campus and the C3 lot were among the most flooded areas of campus, said Lt. Curtis Young of the University Police.
