More rains still to come

DeKALB | NIU staff meteorologist Gilbert Sebenste predicts upcoming rain showers and a slight increase in flooding on campus this afternoon.

After heavy rainfall and severe flooding, many of DeKalb’s roads and bridges have been closed. After several NIU buildings flooded and were closed down, campus was declared closed to all non-essential personnel and operations.

Sebenste also said there is more rain headed toward DeKalb, but the worst parts of the storm have passed.

“We’re probably going to get another half inch [of rain],” Sebenste said.

He also said NIU students and DeKalb residents likely will see a couple brief and heavy downpours this afternoon and into the evening. Sometime this evening, Sebenste said a cold front will move into the area and put a halt to the rains.

The weather for the remainder of the weekend is expected to be cloudy, but dry, Sebenste said.

Moreover, the high volume of water on the ground around the area will make for very humid conditions. This means NIU students and DeKalb citizens alike will have to weather not only the rains, but likely a large influx of mosquitoes as well.
