Review: Joe Rogan

By Keith Beebe

Grade: B | When he’s not hosting “Fear Factor,” outing Carlos Mencia’s stand-up routine or humiliating arrogant teenagers with MySpace messages, Joe Rogan is a comedian – and he’s actually pretty funny.

Recorded in San Francisco in September 2006, “Shiny Happy Jihad” is 63 minutes of Rogan’s commentary on topics like suicide bombers, the unfortunate stigma that comes with hosting “Fear Factor,” homosexuality, and why “Brokeback Mountain” is the funniest film he has ever seen.

Rogan’s routine is well-paced and extremely energetic throughout, sharing stories ranging from growing up Catholic to the horror of a girlfriend going to Las Vegas for the weekend.

Rogan’s language throughout the CD is expectedly crude, but not overdone, as Rogan masterfully saves the four-letter words for punch lines and other areas of emphasis. Rogan may not have Richard Pryor’s delivery or the cynical genius of Bill Hicks, but his material is strong and skillfully told, keeping things interesting by frequently shifting topics and engaging in quality banter with the audience. The best part of the CD is the bonus section featuring a special Q&A forum between Rogan and the audience. Rogan discusses topics like the cancellation of “Fear Factor” and the UFC fight he was supposed to have with Wesley Snipes.

“Shiny Happy Jihad” succeeds because it proves Rogan to be a skilled comic who is more than qualified to be comedy’s resident watchdog. You can bet no one will steal this material.
