SA elected, NIU more involved

DeKALB | A gloomy day Wednesday may have slowed campaigners, but it did not severely affect the polls.

The Student Association/Campus Activities Board election two-day turnout annihilated last year’s totals. About four percent of NIU’s student population voted – 1,020 students made it to the polls, up from 410 last spring.

A voter-turnout campaign led by election commissioner Erick Brenes may have been one reason for larger turnout, but Brenes believes that a debate held March 20, its airing on channel 20 in the dorms, and the candidates’ help in spreading the word of the election led to this year’s high turnout.

According to Brenes, peak voting times were between noon and 2 p.m.

Jarvis Purnell and Shaun Crisler are both SA executive veterans, Purnell having been this term’s treasurer and Crisler previously serving in the SA president and treasurer positions. Ricky Garcia and Jason Andree both served as SA senators this year.

Purnell did not return repeated phone calls after his victory, but presidential candidate Aaron Funfsinn worried Purnell would not change what Funfsinn felt was corruption in the SA.

“I am obviously disappointed, because I felt that I would have done the best job cleaning up the SA,” Funfsinn said. “Jarvis has the opportunity now to clean up the SA. That means more than just a token appointment. If he does not do this, then nothing will have changed.”

The vice president of programming position was the only one opposed in CAB, with Chasity Simon beating out Mona Farraj.

Dion Smith will be entering his third term as president of CAB and Colleen Murphy will be continuing her post as CAB vice president of administration.

Jonathan Holiway will be promoted from his current position as assistant vice president for corporate relations.
