Eddie Money

By Mat Warrenfeltz

Grade: F | What is it about aging musicians that makes them feel the need to record a covers album in the later stages of their career?

Is it the fact that they want to pay homage to their favorite artists, or is it the fact that they just simply have run out of any shred of creative song-writing ability, making them incapable of coming up with new material of their own?

In the case of Mr. Money, you would have to choose the latter.

What ever happened to the man that gave us “Two Tickets to Paradise,” “Give Me Some Water” and other late ‘70s/early ‘80s classics? One thing is for sure, his vocals have not slipped one bit – they are as breathy and cheesy as they were 30 years ago. This time, they’re being put to other musician’s songs. And the songs don’t even have their own “Eddie Money” creative twist to them. This is basically just the original songs with Eddie’s vocals slapped on top. Good song selection doesn’t make up for poor composition and vocals.

This covers effort is the first release since 1999, and he wasn’t turning many heads eight years ago. Maybe it would be fair to say that Eddie should’ve left his magic 25 or 30 years ago and let the dream die, instead of embarrassing himself over and over again by releasing discs that are only purchased as gag-gifts for various events.

Sorry Eddie, but you dropped the ball, again.
