Parody movie not so epic

By Christopher Schimmel

Movies like “The Chronicles of Narnia,” “X-Men 3: The Last Stand” and “Borat … ” were box-office sensations in the past year – and were perfectly fine the way they were.

Unfortunately, directors Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer felt the need to ruin them by making this parody movie.

The lack of a plot outside of the parody makes this movie boring to watch and a wasteland for decent humor. Someone, somewhere must watch these movies, though, because the two have directed and written seven movies together.

This movie disappoints the entire way through.

Lucy (Jayma Mays) repeats every word that Susan (Faune A. Chambers) says throughout the movie, which is not funny but annoying. Edward (Kal Penn) and Peter (Adam Campbell) join these two to make a team that seems built to annoy.

Penn has chances every once in a while to make a decent film or TV episode, but always comes back to making movies solely based on junior high humor.

Every time the movie attempts a witty joke, they ruin it by explaining why the joke was funny. It’s hard to imagine a group of people making this movie and thinking, “This is funny.”

The most appealing part of the movie is a rap song performed by pirates, led by Captain Jack Swallows (Darrell Hammond). The bit is drawn from Jack Sparrow (of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies) and crude humor. This alone may have been OK, but they stole the beat and melody from Andy Samberg and Chris Parnell’s “Lazy Sunday” skit from Saturday Night Live.

Pieces from so many good movies are taken out of context and put together in ways they should not be. The only thing this movie succeeded in doing is making the movies it picked on more appealing by comparison.
