Window broken at Shelley’s

DeKALB | When two people walk by Village Commons carrying a large window pane next week, fret not: You aren’t in that movie scene where you are destined to crash into it.

At 1:46 a.m. Sunday, DeKalb police officers responded to a report of a broken window at Shelley’s, 901 Lucinda Ave. Upon arrival, officers observed a 4-by-6 foot panel of glass broken in the front of the business. Officers spoke to the manager, who said Brian W. Phelan, 21, of Tinley Park, was pounding on the window from the outside when it broke.

Phelan ran eastbound from the scene and was caught by a manager half a block away. The manager brought Phelan back to Shelley’s, where Phelan was identified as the individual who broke the window and was arrested. The DeKalb Fire Department was summoned to the scene to treat lacerations on Phelan’s left hand. Phelan refused treatment at Kishwaukee Community Hospital. Phelan was transported to the police department and charged with criminal damage to property, and he posted bond.

Shelly’s normally closes at 3 a.m. Sunday morning, but a Shelly’s manager who wished to remain anonymous said they had to close the store an hour early because it got too cold. A piece of plywood is covering the missing pane, and Shelly’s plans on replacing it by next week. The manager Sunday night said customers really haven’t said anything about the missing window.
