DeKALB | Ashley Clement was named MAC West Softball Player of the Week Wednesday.

Clement received the honor after hitting .400 and slugging .700 in four games at the Ramada Inn/Northern Iowa Dome Tournament.

The sophomore catcher had a home run, six RBI and had a .500 on-base percentage.

As a team, the Huskies went 2-2 at the tournament, defeating Northern Iowa and South Dakota while losing to Drake and North Dakota State.

Another high score, another loss

The NIU gymnastics team posted its highest score of the season against ninth-ranked Denver Saturday.

Unfortunately, that still wasn’t enough, as the Huskies fell by a margin of 197 – 193.525.

Season highs were posted on the uneven parallel bars, balance beam and floor exercise.

Sophomore Leah Johnson took second place in the all-around with a score of 38.9, her highest all-around score of the season.

Two titles for track

Despite claiming two championships at the Ball State quadrangular, the Huskies finished fourth.

NIU finished one point out of third place, being defeated by MAC opponents Western Michigan, Miami University and Ball State.

Ashley Morrow won first place in the weight throw, posting a season-best throw of 17.67 meters. The senior also claimed second place in the shot put.

The 4 x 400 team of Carolyn Vasquez, Lorene Skipper, Kristin Ewald and Coretta Evans was the other first-place finish for NIU.

Mixed results for tennis

NIU women’s tennis won its home opener against Eastern Illinois on Sunday.

In doubles, EIU won the first two matches before Megan Brooks and Brooke Forsberg defeated Stephanie Harmazy and Sam Lininger 8-1.

Brooks and Forsberg won their singles matches, both winning in two sets. Nao Umemura and Dora Delgadillo also won their singles matches.

While the women’s tennis team prospered, the men’s team fell to Illinois State.

Alex Friesen was the only Huskie to win in singles competition against the Redbirds.

In the doubles, Friesen paired with Jimmy Chu to be the only doubles winner for NIU.
