Freshmen celebrate Bears’ NFC triumph

Matt Zaucha moved his 27-inch TV into the Douglas Hall C5 lounge, where 19 of his friends and floormates crowded to watch the Chicago Bears’ 39-14 win over New Orleans Sunday.

“It was intense,” said Zaucha, a freshman business major.

Those not watching the game still knew when the Bears scored their first touchdown after the group yelled and jumped out of their chairs at 3:20 p.m. From that point on, the noise level and intensity only increased. The usual chest butts, high fives, verbal and visual replays, and comedy ensued until the final ten-second countdown.

“I’m pretty speechless,” said freshman pre-pharmacy student Anthony Galante. “Go Bears! They’re definitely going to the Super Bowl and they’re going to win it.”

For being speechless, Galante and other Douglas Hall residents made a lot of noise. They sang along with Queen’s “We are the Champions” and “We Will Rock You” while walking through the hall.

“I can’t believe we’re going to the Super Bowl,” said Garrett Koster, a freshman industrial and systems engineering major.

“It’s the most exciting thing in Chicago sports history since Michael Jordan’s return,” said freshman undecided major Ryan Shields.
