Rise’ sinks with dirty jokes

By Christopher Schimmel

“Van Wilder 2: The Rise of Taj” is about a transfer student’s attempt to defeat a pompous British noble and steal his girlfriend.

Various parts of the movie feel like a romantic comedy, while others feel full of dirty jokes and bad acting.

After graduating from a college in the states, Taj (Kal Penn) continues his studies at a school in England.

Taj meets his antagonist when he is turned away from a fraternity and is sent to live with the “outcasts” of the school.

Taj helps teach his housemates to think highly of themselves and prove they can do anything.

Throughout the near-impossible task of beating the champion of a school-wide competition, Taj falls in love with the antagonist’s girlfriend and wins her heart.

While there are some funny and even somewhat touching moments, the majority focuses on how to get women naked.

Riddled with numerous half-naked women and more sexual references than one would care to count, the movie still manages to make a bit of an impact.

The message may be a little hazy — or possibly very hazy —but the idea is that a person can do anything he or she puts his or her mind to.

This movie walks a fine line of changing into just another movie about sex, but a few points in the movie barely hold it together.

Penn seems very comfortable in a role that does not require too much actual acting, but can allow him to goof around. While he has had semi-serious roles, this sort of movie seems to be where he excels.

While he is funny throughout, the more interesting comedy comes from the surrounding characters. He is too busy simply making crude remarks. This movie is another example of comedy that sinks as low as it needs to get a cheap laugh.
