University Police handle fight, fire

DeKALB | While the DeKalb police had their hands full late last week, University Police had its own incidents to deal with.

Jeffrey W. Norman, a freshman undecided major, was charged with civil battery Wednesday evening.

The victim was accused of taking personal items belonging to the offender, said Lt. Matthew Kiederlen, interim chief of the UP.

“At a later date, the offender approached the victim with his hand outstretched to shake [the victim’s] hand, and to say that they had no issues,” Kiederlen said. “After he shook his hand, he punched the victim twice in the face.”

Norman has been charged with one count of civil battery.

A less prevalent crime occurred the next night at Grant Towers.

Thursday night, on the ninth floor of Grant North Tower D, an unknown individual lit a dry erase board on fire. The board was hung up on the outside of a door.

No flames were present and only a mild amount of smoke generated from the fire set to the plastic board, the hall director told police. The hall director also said there was no threat of a fire.

Only mild damage was done to the steel door, which will require repainting.

Incidents such as this are fairly unusual, Kiederlen said.

“People do dumb things, but this is fairly uncommon,” he said.
