Warrants issued

DeKALB | Three individuals, one of them an NIU student, have been issued with arrest warrants for their alleged participation in a Saturday morning assault in front of Grant North, according to the state attorney’s office.

The warrants have been issued for Christopher Jones, 24 of Chicago, on two counts of aggravated battery; Gregory Daniels, 20 of Chicago, on two counts of aggravated battery; and Martell D. Hunter, 19 of Chicago, on two counts of aggravated battery and one count of robbery.

Hunter, a freshman undecided major, has a bond set at $50,000. The bonds of Jones and Daniels, neither of whom are students at NIU, are set at $30,000 each.

If convicted, the two older offenders face a potential sentence of three to five years in prison for their aggravated battery charges. Hunter could face an additional four to seven years if convicted for aggravated battery and robbery charges.

The reported fourth suspect in the incident currently has not been issued a warrant.

“Police confirmed that they had initially questioned four people and continue to investigate the involvement of a fourth person,” said Melanie Magara, NIU assistant vice president of public affairs. “The charges filed Wednesday did not include that person.”

None of the accused individuals have been arrested thus far, as the police did not arrive on the scene while the incident was occurring, Magara said.

The current locations of the three individuals for whom warrants have been filed is unknown.

“They gave their statements to the police, and then went away,” Magara said. “They’re sitting around waiting to be arrested somewhere. The police are looking for them.”

The judicial office presented Hunter with a banning letter, which prevents the student from stepping foot anywhere on campus, Magara said.
