Halloween scares on stage

DeKALB | The NIU theater department will unleash the spirit of scary movies and dark humor as the Halloween season draws ever closer.

On Oct. 27 and 28 scenes from cult classic horror movies will come to life on stage. Eleven senior acting students will put on the fifth annual “Children of the Corn” show at the Corner Theater in the Stevens building.

“We’re not trying to scare, but just get people in the mood for Halloween”, said Mike Leamen, senior acting major, who would later take the stage for his role as young Dr. Frankenstein.

During a speech before the dry run on Thursday night Leamen asked the cast members to get into light spirits. After a light check, and when all cast members had arrived, the crew took the stage in a dramatic run through of “This is Halloween” from the movie “The Nightmare Before Christmas”.

Among the scenes being performed are segments from the movies “Scream,” “Poltergeist,” “Leprechaun in the Hood” and “The Devil’s Advocate.” This year’s show will also include a “Thriller” dance sequence choreographed by senior dance major Krysti Schroeder.

“I’ve seen the show the past three years,” said Schroeder. “It’s always been good and done with experienced participants. Everyone involved is very talented.”

Tickets will be on sale before the show for five dollars. All proceeds will be used to send cast members to Chicago, New York City and Los Angles where these students will be in search for agents and job opportunities.
