‘Girls Gone Wild’ not so wild

By Ryan Strong

DeKALB | Students and residents alike arrived in droves Friday for the Girls Gone Wild event at Bar One.

A large coach bus parked outside the bar decorated with the event’s logo led patrons to stop and inquire within, creating a line outside the bar that snaked into the parking lot. The bar crowd, which appeared to be about 90 percent men, awaited eagerly to meet the stars of the well-known video tape and DVD franchise.

The event brought out fans like senior communication major Al-Well Onyegbule.

“I love it,” Onyegbule said. “I just had to show my support.”

Onyegbule didn’t think Girls Gone Wild portrayed a negative image of women, nor was it demeaning to anyone.

“Everyone is of age and consent is given, so it’s not demeaning,” he said. “It is just people having fun.”

Despite speculation, there were no protesters at the event. However, some Bar One customers were opposed to the event’s depiction of females.

“This creates a very negative image of women,” said NIU alumnus Frank Wapole. “It really demeans them.”

Daniel Lee, a junior business administration major, agreed with Wapole’s views.

“I think this really does make women look bad,” Lee said.

Others attendees disagreed with Wapole and Lee, like senior accountancy major Brian Kim.

“It doesn’t demean women at all,” Kim said. “This is just people having fun.”

Regardless of the different opinions, the event still attracted a sizable crowd.

Bar One put up yellow posters around the entrance stating:

“No nudity will be permitted on Bar One property.”

This new policy angered some.

“There are no girls going wild,” said DeKalb resident Donold Jackson, 27. Jackson said the bar was mostly filled with zealous men and very few women. This led some people to leave early.

Moreover, Bar One officials weren’t oblivious to some NIU students’ opposition to the event.

“Everyone is entitled to their own opinion,” said Bar One promoter Brian Faeming. “The club is not trying to embarrass, demean or send negative images of anyone. The event was just meant for people to have fun.”

Several customers asked Faeming whether or not Girls Gone Wild would ever return to DeKalb.

“That is for us to know and you to find out,” Faeming said.
