Who’s your Dream Man (or Greek Goddess)?

By Molly Thurber

Fraternities and sororities united Tuesday night for the Dream Man and Greek Goddess pageant in the Carl Sandburg Auditorium.

The Greeks gathered in support of their fellow members as a disc jockey played music, setting the mood for the evening’s events.

The pageant is a Delta Zeta sponsored charity event for Gallaudet University, which is the only four-year university for the hearing impaired.

Men and women from sororities and fraternities competed in several events — a talent portion, swim and formal wear and a Q-and-A portion — to win the coveted title.

Sigma Kappa member Jenny Rayphole, junior communication major, and Erik Swastek, junior sociology major, won the overall event.

“The judging was based on a one-to-five scale taking into account appearance, talent, creativity and crowd response,” said Gretchen Waltenbaugh, the Delta Zeta adviser and pageant judge.

“I can’t believe I won,” said Rayphole, a member of Sigma Kappa sorority.

The first event was the formal wear competition. The contestants strutted their stuff on the runway sporting ball gowns. The hosts, Christina Freisleben and Brad Sweet, last year’s Dream Man, talked about each of the contestants’ likes and dislikes, hobbies and the car that most accurately represented his or her sex life.

The second part of the pageant was the talent portion. Contestants performed an array of talents ranging from stand-up comedy to dancing to eating. Otis Caldwell managed to eat liver sausage, hot wasabi pieces, pig’s feet, mashed potatoes and one ranch dressing packet.

The third portion, the audience favorite, was swim wear. The contestants wore various swimsuits and paraded around the stage.

Finally was the Q-and-A segment. The contestants had to answer one question ranging from “What reality show would you be on and why,” to “If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be?”

The evening wrapped up at The Barn, 1215 Blackhawk Road, with pizza and a barrel of lemonade.
