Fraternities gear up for Men’s Tugs

By Michelle Gilbert

Months of preparation have gone into the Men’s Tugs event today and Friday.

Some teams, like Sigma Phi Epsilon, have been in the gym all year preparing for this event and have practiced indoors and outdoors since coming back from Winter Break, said Mark Michiels, senior exercise physiology major and Sigma Phi Epsilon president.

“It’s a good atmosphere; the guys have been practicing for six months and there’s a lot of fan involvement,” said David Bragg, physical therapy graduate student and Sigma Phi Epsilon philanthropy chair. “It’s a good break for a few hours at the end of the semester.”

Each fraternity is going into tugs hoping to come out with the championship title.

Since 1974, Pi Kappa Alpha has won the Men’s Tugs Championship title 26 times.

Phi Kappa Sigma won the title in 2003, while Sigma Phi Epsilon won the title in 2005. Tau Kappa Epsilon is hoping to improve its overall place from last year as well.

Sponsors for Tugs 2006 include Out on a Whim, Molly’s, the Village Commons Bookstore, Campus Activities Board, Dynamic Tanning, Nathan Winston Services and Buhr’s Landscaping & Lawn Care Inc.

“We’ve ordered 2,000 seats for this thing, so it should be pretty big,” Bragg said.
