‘Reefer Madness’

By Andy McMurray

Probably one of the most over-the-top and in-your-face propaganda films of all time is “Reefer Madness.”

This 1936 cult classic centers on a tale about urban teenagers who succumb to the menace of marijuana. The film’s token “potheads” smoke out and lose all control over their senses. This, of course, leads to a tragic hit-and-run accident, a shooting and general malfeasance and promiscuity.

This movie is so bad it’s hilarious. As Jimmy (Warren McCollum) drives over a pedestrian at 50 mph and high on weed, the ridiculousness explodes from the badly lit set.

Pot heads don’t drive fast, they don’t even walk fast unless it involves a Twinkie or an ice-cold Coca-Cola. This movie is apparently meant to scare young people away from pot. Maybe it worked in 1936, but in 2005, someone watching this film probably couldn’t stop laughing long enough to be scared of anything, except, maybe, the film’s editing.
