‘American Psycho’

By Andy McMurray

Before he was Batman, Christian Bale lit up the big screen in the 2000 film “American Psycho” as Bateman. Behind bloody knives, nail guns and murder is an underlying message.

This film, through implication, says “pay attention to your surroundings.” Many of the characters fail to do this during the film. At one point, a woman fails to notice when asking Bateman (Bale) what his job is that he responds, “murders and executions.” She assumes he says mergers and acquisitions and her head ends up in his state-of-the-art stainless steel refrigerator.

Bateman gets away with murder repeatedly, despite eventually confessing to his lawyer. Again and again, co-workers and others continue to mistake Bateman for other people.

Though about a murderous rampage, the film expounds interesting points about modern-day, fast-paced American life which resonate with anyone who claws through the work-a-day world of America.
