‘Infinite Crisis’ finally debuts

By Matt Lee

For the last year, DC Comics has teased comic fans with the release of “Infinite Crisis,” a story line that might very well go down in history as one of the greatest comic-book stories ever.

“Infinite Crisis,” a seven issue mini-series that will affect the entire DC universe, marks the anniversary of the original crisis, “Crisis on Infinite Earths.”

Although it is still unclear what the new “Infinite Crisis” will be about, rumors have been running wild regarding what will happen and who will be affected. Even still, it is unclear whether or not the old “crisis” will have any ties to the new “crisis.” What we do know is Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, the three most powerful superheroes in the DC universe, along with countless others, will be heavily affected by the events of this “crisis.”

DC Comics has managed to maintain reader interest in the year-long build up to “Infinite Crisis.” The company does not appear to be worried about over-exposing its readers to the countless crossovers, tie-ins and mini-series.

“It’s something we are all, in the company, extremely proud of,” said Dan DiDio, DC Comics vice president and executive editor, at Boston’s recent Wizard World comic convention.

Though fans have been anxiously awaiting the release of the first issue of “Infinite Crisis,” there are still people who aren’t buying into the hype.

“I don’t know if it could live up to the hype,” said Rick Berg, manager of Graham Crackers Comics, 901 C. Lucinda Ave. “As a retailer, I love it. As a reader, I think it will be a giant letdown.”

Berg is not the only person who feels like the giant DC crossover will eventually turn out to be a bad idea.

“The art should be pretty,” said Kevin Healy, a Graham Crackers attendant and NIU alumnus. “But, [DC is] going back 20 years to things that don’t matter anymore.”

The first issue of the highly anticipated “Infinite Crisis,” written by Geoff Johns and illustrated by Phil Jimenez and Andy Lanning, is now available in two different covers.
