Bars prepare for weekend festivities

Homecoming weekend has arrived, and the bars in DeKalb are prepared to make the most of it. Establishments such as Molly’s, Otto’s Niteclub, Fatty’s Pub and Starbusters each have entertainment planned for Friday and Saturday.

Festivities such as “Kegs ‘n’ Eggs” start early Saturday morning at Bar One, Starbusters and Fatty’s. This ritual, which consists of alcohol being consumed with breakfast, has been a Homecoming tradition in the area for years and is the only time of year bars will open their doors to the public as early as 6 a.m.

Besides the early morning partying, bars in the area usually try to book more popular acts for the weekend.

Otto’s Niteclub, 118 E. Lincoln Highway, a bar known for mainly supporting acts with a variety of followings, decided to book Trippin’ Billies, a Dave Matthews Band cover band, Saturday night. Although the band is a bit more mainstream than some of the usual acts, Otto’s will feature The Pimps on Friday.

“We promote a lot more for this weekend than usual,” said Otto’s bartender and manager Carie Pasenelli. “Trippin’ Billies also is more for the Homecoming crowd than our usual acts.”

Another popular act coming to the area is Mike and Joe, who will play at Starbusters Bar and Grill, 930 Pappas Drive, Saturday night. Although the band usually pulls a large audience, Starbusters owner Nick Tsiftilis expects the Homecoming crowd to be much larger than normal.

“Homecoming is like Christmas come early,” Tsiftilis said. “All the students are out and a lot of the alumni come back. There’s a lot of energy and it’s really neat.”

Starbusters will also have a mechanical bull for customers to ride Friday night.

Fatty’s Pub, 1312 W. Lincoln Highway, will also be featuring a live band, Generations, which plays pop from the ‘70s through the ‘90s. Live music is a form of entertainment Fatty’s usually doesn’t offer but, as usual, Homecoming is a different story.

“It’s always extremely busy on Homecoming weekend,” Fatty’s manager Jayme Skogen said. “Everyone comes out and it’s always a good time.”

One bar that will not feature live music is Molly’s, 1022 W. Lincoln Highway, but manager Joe Sanfilippo thinks this is a good way to stand out from the others during Homecoming.

“We’ll be doing our usual thing,” said Sanfilippo. “And we’ll have the Jager Girls out as well, along with some more promotional stuff.”
