Gretchen Wilson: All Jacked Up

By Matt Lee

Gretchen Wilson, country music’s hard-rocking “Redneck Woman,” was an instant sensation with her 2004 debut “Here for the Party.” Now she’s back with her follow up album, “All Jacked Up,” and she has taken country to a whole new level. Much like her “Muzik Mafia” cohorts Big and Rich, Gretchen demonstrates convincingly she is not a typical woman in country music and not all about singing sappy love songs to the broken hearted.

“All Jacked Up,” the album’s title track; considered the sequel to “Redneck Woman,” breaks out the fiddle in a big way, creating an exciting, whiskey-drinkin’ line-dance-boogie which has all the energetic qualities of a top notch tune her fans can appreciate. “Politically Uncorrect,” a duet with Merle Haggard, and “Skoal Ring” are just a few tracks that make this album one of the better country albums of 2005.

Of all the songs, “Not Bad for a Bartender” sparks the most interest. The song gives the true life story of Wilson in which she sings about her life as a bartender, her 8th grade education and her sudden rise to fame. Wilson, with a background of poor education and floor-sweeping, has managed to escalate herself to near superstar status in just a few years.

Although Wilson had a difficult and shaky past, her future will no doubt be bright and filled with many milestones. In the years to come, Wilson will hopefully continue to sell countless records and elevate herself into becoming a household name along with such country music superstars as Faith Hill, Reba McEntire and Shania Twain.
