“Uncle Buck”

By Genevieve Diesing

Two words: John Candy. He’s at his comedic prime in this 1989 classic (as is the nine-year-old Macaulay Culkin) and doesn’t give us a boring moment. Candy plays a bachelor uncle named Buck who takes care of his brothers’ kids for a few weeks, and despite his unconventional (or sloppy, crazy) lifestyle, he wins over his nieces and nephew and even their untrusting parents. The story hits deep with its touching development of the teenage daughter’s coming of age, as well as her relationship with Buck and her parents. Our hearts go out to her, and to Buck, who, for all his impulsive ways, is really a perfect sitter with a heart of gold. And for anyone who saw Mike Myers’ famous dialogue about a conspicuous mole in 2002’s “Austin Powers in Goldmember” should know that the original, and funnier version of that scene was from this film.
