“The Professional”

By Adrian Finiak

This Luc Besson film is a vivid portrayal of the life of a professional assassin. Jean Reno plays a skilled hitman who befriends a young, troubled Natalie Portman. Gary Oldman plays a short-tempered crooked cop who kills Portman’s family over a misplaced payment. Portman hires Reno, her apartment neighbor, to conduct her revenge. Portman learns how to be a stealthy and smart killer through a series of tests. In return Reno learns to love and be open with himself. He displays affection and humor by raising the girl. Reno proves he truly is New York’s best assassin by finishing all of his jobs.

The Professional is easy to follow and never lacks action. The dialogue of the film is funny and serious at times, bringing a sense of comic relief among all the action.
