Ryan Cabrera: You Stand Watching

By Stephanie Szuda

Ryan Cabrera will have every pre-teen girl swooning over him after one listen of this album.

“And even if we can or can’t be friends/ I’ll be with you until the very end so/ shine on/ you were made to.”

How many exes can say that?

For a singer/songwriter, “You Stand Watching” sounds too produced. It loses something. The blend of piano and guitar sounds really ordinary; very adult-contemporary. It takes away from the lyrics because they don’t come off as sincere. Cabrera’s voice has a soothing sound without getting too whiny. Considering the style, this album really could appeal to a broad audience.

“From The Start” is about Cabrera wanting his love interest to leave her boyfriend for him. He says, “I’ll tell you what you need/ a man more like me/ it’s not a fantasy.”

A fantasy, huh? This guy is that great. How did Ashlee Simpson let this one get away?

The whole album follows this theme – love, be it lost or found, or in some way complicated. It’s hard to tell if any of these songs are about his past on-and-off relationship with Simpson. Cabrera did a pretty good job of making it vague enough to not tell if he did write about their relationship.

Cabrera found success with “On The Way Down” from 2004’s “Take It All Away.” Simpson appeared in his video for the single. Perhaps putting post-Saturday Night Live Simpson in his video this time around wouldn’t be such a good idea. Maybe he should try for the other Simpson sister? Hey, he needs to give people a reason to tune in. The music might not cut it.
