“Venus Beauty Institute”

By Genevieve Diesing

After I saw this film for the first time, I had to watch it again the next day. It’s a story about the workers and customers of a beauty spa in France and the romance that flickers in and out of their lives.

Angele, (Nathalie Baye) the main character, is an aging, cynical woman who suffers from a painful love history. A complete stranger approaches her in a café and professes his love to her and then pursues her relentlessly. Angele lets feelings develop in spite of herself and ends up battling her own doubt and misanthropy in order to find happiness.

Originally I rented this movie because Audrey Tautou (from “Amelie”) was on the cover, but her part isn’t that big. The film expertly channels the feelings of loneliness and despair I think a lot of people experience in their relationships, but it ends on a satisfyingly optimistic note.
