Portion of Greek moratorium lifted

As of Wednesday, the third-party venue portion of the moratorium on Greek events with alcohol was lifted, said Brian Hemphill, vice president for Student Affairs.

Third-party venues include events that are held at locations other than the Greek chapter houses, such as a bar or a formal at a hotel, Hemphill said.

The moratorium on Greek facility events with alcohol will remain in place until the required member training and the implementation of new security processes has been completed, Hemphill said.

Michael Coakley, the Greek Social Policy Task Force chair was not available for comment about member training and new security processes.

Once chapters have completed their required training and implemented the new security processes, events with alcohol at chapter houses may resume, as outlined by the policy and procedures.

Once Hemphill signs the official letter confirming the policy change, which is slated to happen today, copies of the policy will be available in Student Involvement and Leadership Development, Campus Life Building, Room 150.

Megan Hechler, College Panhellenic Council vice president of administration and Mike Czekanski, Interfraternity Council vice president of public relations, said they were relieved part of the moratorium was lifted before school ended.

“It took a lot of weight off our shoulders,” Hechler said. “We’ll have the last weeks of school to relax and enjoy without having to worry about breaking any rules.”

Kelli Nickols, National Panhellenic Council treasurer said the moratorium didn’t affect the NPHC chapters much to begin with because they don’t have chapter houses or events with alcohol.

Former CPC President Stephanie Moy also said most chapters had their formals earlier in the semester and made them dry because they normally don’t wait until the end of the semester to have them.
