Expert to share budget travel tips

Getting around the world on a college student’s budget is manageable, world travel expert and award-winning author, Doug Lansky said.

The CAB speakers committee will host its final speaker of the year today featuring Lansky. The speech begins at 7 p.m. at the Holmes Student Center’s Carl Sandburg Auditorium.

Lansky, a nationally syndicated travel columnist, has backpacked in more than 100 countries. His presentation will include stories and slides from his adventures abroad. This presentation has been widely regarded as informative and comical, according to Lansky’s Web site.

Attendees will learn how to get around the world and backpack on a tight budget.

Bertrand J. Simpson Jr., associate director of student involvement and CAB adviser, said he is excited about this event.

“Mr. Lansky is a widely experienced speaker when it comes to international travel,” Simpson said. “We are hoping that students can benefit from his expertise on economic world travel.”

Lansky has written several award-winning travel books, including “Up the Amazon Without a Paddle,” “Last Trout in Venice: The Far-Flung Escapades of an Accidental Adventurer” and “Rough Guide to First Time Around The World.” He also gives away an $888 three-month Eurorail pass at every one of his presentations. He has traveled from Sweden to share his knowledge with the NIU community. This is his first time speaking at NIU.

Simpson said he is convinced attending Lansky’s presentation will enhance anyone’s trip abroad.

“The more you learn about the country that you would like to visit, the more fulfilling your trip is going to be,” Simpson said. “Most people like to travel. This is something that quite a few people can benefit from: economic world travel.”
