Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity will hold a softball tournament that begins today as the final portion of its philanthropy, Paddy Murphy.

The softball tournament starts at 4:30 p.m. today in the fields behind Stevenson Towers and ends with the championship game at 2 and 5 p.m. Sunday.

Proceeds go to the Children’s Miracle Network with a goal of $2,500 this year, said Dave Haas, this year’s Paddy Murphy and a senior marketing major.

Sigma Kappa, Alpha Sigma Alpha, Alpha Phi, Delta Zeta, Sigma Sigma Sigma, Delta Gamma, Alpha Delta Pi and Sigma Lambda Sigma sororities are expected to participate in this year’s Paddy Murphy.

The original Paddy Murphy was an SAE from Northwestern University who stole liquor from Al Capone. When Capone found out, he had Murphy killed and the SAE’s have since held the Paddy Murphy event in his honor.

Activities were held throughout the week including chapter house decorating and a contest where representatives from each participating sorority were asked questions by an acting Capone. Funds are also raised through T-shirt sales.

Paddy Murphy’s winner is determined throughout the week and the weekend, Haas said.
