Otto’s weekend soundtrack porous

By Lindsey Rosati

It’s a weekend of shows for Otto’s Niteclub, 118 E. Lincoln Highway.

Motion City Soundtrack will hit DeKalb tonight along with Cardinal Sun, Small Towns Burn A Little Slower and Somerset. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m.

No strangers to the DeKalb crowd, Motion City Soundtrack performed early this year at the Holmes Student Center’s Duke Ellington Ballroom in February on the Epitaph Records Tour.

Originally from Minneapolis, Motion City Soundtrack formed in 1999 and had its Epitaph debut “I Am The Movie” released in 2003. Its second album, “Commit This to Memory,” is due in June.

Sponge will be at Otto’s at Friday with Even The Odd and Blackout. Doors open at 9 p.m.

“I liked Sponge in the ‘90s and have seen them at shows I have worked at,” said Nort Johnson, director of public relations and promotions for Otto’s. “Music goes in cycles, and music that was popular [years] ago is becoming popular again today.”

Sponge came out of Detroit in the mid-’90s with a post-grunge and hard-rock sound. Their 1994 release, “Rotting Pinata,” produced such hits as “Molly (16 candles)” and “Plowed.”

Sponge followed up their debut with 1996’s “Wax Ecstatic” and 1999’s “New Pop Sunday.”

The veteran act is on the road garnering support for its fourth album, “For all the Drugs in the World.”

“Introducing a younger crowd to the heroes of rock will help bring it back,” said Johnson.

Both are 21-and-older shows; tickets are $10 the day of the show.
