Weekender’s Pick the Oscar Challenge

By Derek Wright

Chris Shim, a 2002 graduate of Harvard University, won Weekender’s 2005 Oscar contest by correctly predicting 19 of the 24 winners.

The Seattle native came across the Northern Star’s Web site while searching the Internet for Academy Award competitions.

“Each year I enter different contests,” Shim said. “I usually never win and do very poorly.”

This year, he entered contests for The New York Times and CNN.com.

Currently living in Virginia and working for the Red Cross, Shim has been filling out Oscar polls with friends for about 10 years.

“I first really got into movies in eighth grade,” Shim said. “There was a girl I liked that really liked movies. I would read reviews in the paper so I had something to talk to her about. But I never got the courage to ask her out.”

Weekender tallied 12 correct answers – far behind Shim. Second-place finisher Aaron Davis and third-place finisher Ashok Amaran finished with 18 and 17 correct answers, respectively.
