John Legend: Get Lifted

By Lady C

Straight out of Philly (but originally Ohio and more recently New York), John Stephens – aka John Legend – hits us with his highly anticipated album “Get Lifted.”

Stephens isn’t exactly new to the business. He’s had his hands on numerous other projects with his ingenious writing, back-up vocals and pianist skills on albums by Lauryn Hill, Alicia Keys, Janet Jackson, Mary J. Blige, Twista, Black Eyed Peas, Jay-z and Talib Kweli.

Kanye West saw the “legend” in Stephens and gave him his big break.

“Used to Love You” and “Ordinary People” are constantly played and requested on the radio.

The album combines hip-hop, soul and R&B to form an album that lifts the spirit and relates to the soul.

Each track flows into the next starting with the topic of a broken relationship, then in to infidelity, being faithful, love and most of all, the importance of family.

One of the many beautiful tracks, “Stay With You,” says, “I will stay with you/ Through the ups and the downs … When no one else is around/ When the dark clouds arrive/ I will be by your side.”

The name fits him well and so does the style. Without doubt Stephens has what it takes to be a “Legend.”
