University Council tries to move traffic

Traffic and safety problems near the Chick Evans Field House parking lot have caused NIU to schedule minor construction in the area to help alleviate high traffic volume.

Solutions to the problems – among other issues – were discussed Wednesday at the University Council meeting.

Concern for the safety of drivers has risen due to heavy traffic congestion between classes, said Bob Albanese, vice president of Finance and Facilities.

NIU has had problems with cars exiting the parking lot next to Chick Evans Field House over the course of the semester, Albanese said.

Improvements to be finished in the spring include a cul-de-sac by Gabel Hall and the expansion of the fieldhouse lot exit by 4 feet, Albanese said.

NIU also is working with the city of DeKalb to put in a left-turn signal and left-turn lane at the intersection of Stadium Drive and Annie Glidden Road, Albanese said.

The resources, space and budgets committee is looking into opening the north entrance of the DuSable turnaround for two-way traffic by putting in a right-turn only lane on Lucinda Avenue, Albanese said.

The council also discussed the landscape surrounding the turnaround.

“We’re looking into upgrading landscaping and putting up signage to discourage students from cutting across the grass,” Albanese said.

Other committee members voiced alternative suggestions, including placing sidewalks in place of the pathways students wear into the grass.

At least three bus shelters will be added to the DuSable turnaround in time for winter, Albanese said.
