Altgeld settles down

By Desiree Smith

About a month after moving through the revolving glass doors of Altgeld Hall, NIU faculty are just about settled into their new offices.

The move from previous offices to Altgeld was an adjustment, but most thought the move went smoothly.

“It was confusing for a couple of days, but they had it pretty well planned out,” said Donna Mathesius, an administrative assistant to university council.

Some staff members felt the move was coordinated well and there was little trouble.

“The movers were excellent; I don’t think anything was misplaced,” said Chris Welch, an administrative assistant to the provost. “We didn’t miss much work time because the transition went well and it was a lot smoother than I thought it would be.”

Several staff members said they feel lucky to be working in Altgeld.

The facilities are beautiful and people are impressed as they enter the building, said Sandra Little, a program administrative assistant to the Division of University Advancement.

“I feel honored to be working in Altgeld,” she said.

Other staff members agree.

“It’s wonderful,” said Abigail Dean, a development associate for the Division of University Advancement. “It’s amazing to be in a building so rich in university history. I feel very fortunate.”

Many of the faculty now working in Altgeld used to work inLowden Hall.

“It’s a nice, quiet atmosphere,” Welch said of the new building. “I have much more room than I had in Lowden. It’s easier to get my work done because not everyone has to walk through my work space.”

Being here every day is a nice feeling, Welch said.

“I’ve been on campus a long time and the building was in bad shape,” she said. “No one wanted to work here, but now everyone wants to work here.”
