Student charged with domestic battery

NIU sophomore basketball player Rome Sanders was charged Friday with domestic battery following a confrontation with a woman at Stevenson Towers.

University Police arrested Sanders, 20, of Stevenson Towers, shortly after 9:30 p.m., after the woman contacted them and said she was assaulted.

According to police, the woman said she and Sanders had a disagreement an hour earlier. He grabbed her by the arm and “forcibly” pulled her away from Stevenson South’s A-Wing elevators and toward a parking lot west of the residence hall during the argument, the woman told police. Sanders allegedly said he wanted to talk to her.

Where the charges occurred, police said, is when Sanders grabbed the woman.

“As soon as you put your hands on somebody and make them do what they don’t want to, it’s assault,” UP Sgt. Darren Mitchell said.

Following his arrest, Sanders was taken to the police department where he was booked and processed before being transported to the DeKalb County Jail.

Sanders was released from the jail Saturday on a recognizance bond, Lt. Joyce Klein of the DeKalb County Jail said.

This past season, Sanders, a Huskies forward, started 20 of the team’s 30 games. He ranked fifth in scoring, averaging 5.9 points a game.

On Monday, basketball coach Rob Judson said Sanders no longer is working out with the team.

“We’re just following the direction of the judicial office,” Judson said.

NIU’s Judicial Office is investigating the incident but would not comment on Sanders’ case.

Sanders would not comment on his arrest. He is to appear in court April 14.
