Top of lineup key for Huskies

The top of the NIU baseball team’s order provided more than enough offense in Saturday’s doubleheader sweep of Calumet College 12-0 and 18-2.

Leadoff hitter Jeremy Busch went 4-for-7 in the two games with five runs scored, five RBIs and a home run. Busch accomplished this on a day when wind gusts reached up to 43 miles per hour, which Busch said he thought helped with his home run.

“I knew I hit it all right, but I didn’t think it was going to go out,” Busch said. “But with the way the wind was blowing, it had a chance.”

Right fielder Eric Sansouci also went 5-of-9 in the second spot in the order with six RBIs and three runs scored. He also added a line-drive home run in Game 2 that landed quickly over the left field wall.

The Forest Park Community College (Mo.) transfer now sits second on the team with an average at .429, behind Scott Simon, whose .486 average ranks sixth in the MAC.

NIU scored 18 runs in the first three innings of Game 2, including a 10-run second inning.

“It’s tough to maintain focus in that situation because everyone’s trying to go up there and hit one out,” Sansouci said.

Despite the windy conditions, the two outfielders committed no errors.

After losing their past two games and playing what coach Ed Mathey called poor baseball, the Huskies scored 30 runs on 29 hits in the doubleheader.

“We had a great approach today,” Mathey said. “Today would’ve been an easy day for guys to swing for the fences. We stayed in on balls, hit balls to right-center field, up the middle, and that really helped our approach all day.”
