2 students allegedly assault neighbor

Two NIU students allegedly attacked their neighbor Monday morning after he asked them to quiet down.

The incident occurred at about 2:30 a.m. Monday at 1120 Varsity Blvd. when the neighbors of Abraham and Adam Cotto, both 25, asked them to quiet down, DeKalb Police Lt. Jim Kayes said.

The suspects allegedly attempted to enter the neighbor’s apartment. An officer then saw Abraham break the door to the apartment, Kayes said, before Abraham started “pounding on the guy.”

Neither man would let go of the victim when police arrived, Kayes said, and they had to be subdued with pepper spray.

Police arrested both men. The victim was treated at Kishwaukee Community Hospital for a broken jaw.

Adam C. Cotto was charged with mob action, battery and resisting arrest. He was released after posting $500 bond.

Abraham R. Cotto was charged with home invasion, mob action, aggravated battery, criminal damage to property and resisting a peace officer. As of Monday afternoon, he still was being held at the DeKalb County Jail awaiting a $1,500 bond.
