NIU group to visit Mexico over break

By Nicholas Alajakis

An NIU group is planning a trip to Mexico during Spring Break, and it needs a few more students to fill the available spaces.

The “NIU Travel with a Professor” group will spend March 6 to 14 visiting the ancient pyramids of Mexico. Participants will get a chance to visit many of Mexico’s most popular pyramids and shrines, including the Jaguar Palace and the pyramids of the Sun and Moon.

The trip is a great way to get insight on archeology in the region and how it relates to the world, said trip leader Mark Mehrer, who is the chair of the department of anthropology.

Mehrer will accompany trip participants to help provide an overview of the region’s importance.

Steven Johnson, director of external programming for the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, said a trip is a great way to learn a lot about the region and how it ties into other things.

“I like to listen to the professor talk about everything,” Johnson said.

This year’s trip will include stops in Mexico City, San Miguel de Allende and Guadalajara.

The trip costs $2,295, but $400 scholarships are available to interested students. The deadline to sign up is Friday.

Those interested can contact Steven Johnson at the Holmes Student Center’s Room 230 or by calling 753-5200.
