With wins over Eastern Michigan and Buffalo this weekend, the NIU wrestling team secured second place in the MAC.

The Huskies beat EMU 34-7 and Buffalo 25-9 at a Buffalo triangular.

All of NIU’s ranked wrestlers were victorious over the weekend. Sam Hiatt, the 12th-ranked 133-pound wrestler, won both of his matches by major decision. Josh Wooton, the 17th-ranked 149-pound wrestler, won both of his matches. Ben Heizer, the second-ranked 184 pounder, won one by major decision and the other by decision.

Freshman 157-pound Joe Henning won both of his matches by pinfall.

“Joe was really hot today,” NIU coach Dave Grant said. “He pinned a guy ahead of him in the conference rankings so he’ll probably be a higher seed than him now. It was just a huge pin.”

Andy Hiatt, 141 pounds, won both of his matches. Freshman heavyweight Joe Sapp also won both of his matches.

“For us, it’s not all about winning,” Grant said. “It’s about our wrestling style and being dominant. We worked on being aggressive all year long and we were pretty dominant in these matches today. For us to do well in the MAC tourney, we have to be dominating.”
