Student charged with sex assault

An NIU student is free on $5,000 bail after a DeKalb Grand Jury indicted him on criminal sexual assault charges earlier this month.

Justin Fisher, 22, of DeKalb was indicted on sexual assault charges stemming from a Nov. 19, 2003, incident.

Police would not go into detail on the case. DeKalb Police Lt. Jim Kayes did however say the alleged victim was an acquaintance of Fisher.

Particularly in cases where the victim knows the suspect, it is not unusual for arrests on sexual assaults charges to be made weeks after accusations surface, police said.

DeKalb police had been investigating the incident for three months before the indictment, Kayes said. University Police served Fisher’s warrant.

Fisher was released from the DeKalb County Jail on Tuesday after posting $5,000 bond, said DeKalb County Sheriff’s Lt. Joyce Klein. Fisher is set to appear in court March 19.

Criminal sexual assault is a Class 1 felony punishable by four to 15 years in prison.
