Flu vaccine now made available to public

The DeKalb County Health Department now is making the flu vaccine available to all DeKalb County residents, regardless of medical status or age.

The health department ran out of the vaccine on Dec. 9.

After receiving a new supply, the health department restricted the availability of the flu vaccine, providing it only to individuals who were at high risk because of age or health conditions, said Karen Grush, DeKalb County Health Department’s public health administrator.

The vaccine now is available to everyone as long as supplies last.

“We didn’t know if we would have any left,” said Jane Lux, DeKalb County Health Department’s director of the Personal Health Services Division. “We do, and we want to open it up to a wider group of people.”

Those at the highest risk of influenza complication still are encouraged to get vaccinated. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Web site, those at highest risk are children 6 to 23 months old, people 65 and over, pregnant women in their second or third trimesters and those over 2 years of age with chronic medical conditions.

The flu vaccine is available from 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the DeKalb County Health Department, located at 2550 N. Annie Glidden Road. The cost of the vaccination is $10 for adults 19 and older and $8 for children under the age of 19. For more information, call the health department at 758-6673.
