CAHE offers retreat for grad students

By Mike Neumann

Graduate students and faculty members of NIU’s adult and higher education program are invited to participate in a retreat Nov. 1 at Camp Algonquin.

The retreat is an annual student and faculty gathering for adult and higher education members, said Laurel Jeris, associate professor of counseling, adult and health education (CAHE).

“It is a way of communicating information about the masters program in an informal environment,” she said. “I think this is the 32nd year we’ve done this.”

The event is expected to draw nearly 100 members of NIU’s adult and higher education program, Jeris said.

Adult and higher education includes many sub-fields, such as corporate training, community development, social movements and basic adult education of literacy through higher education.

“One major feature of this year’s retreat is that it is the first opportunity for students and faculty to meet with Dr. Lemuel Watson, the new department chair of CAHE,” Jeris said.

The retreat also will welcome Lisa Baumgartner and Sharon Holmes as new associate professors in the department.

Included in the retreat will be information about employment opportunities, presentations and discussions with recent graduates and new areas in the adult and higher education curriculum.

The retreat runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is open to all graduate students, faculty members and alumni of the adult and higher education program.
