In-state rivalry

The NIU baseball team has been playing hot, winning 11 of 13 games, but the weather has been anything but pleasant.

“If this were Greenland I’d say it’s beautiful,” NIU coach Ed Mathey said of the recent weather.

The Huskies (15-9) are ‘supposed’ to travel to Charleston to take on Eastern Illinois (11-16) today at 3 p.m., but with the weather that Illinois has recently experienced the team knows that whether they’ll play or not will be decided later today.

“We always hope we get to play,” freshman designated hitter Scott Simon said. “We always keep a positive attitude. It’s hard in baseball though to try and get in a rhythm when games are canceled.”

Forty-seven degree temperatures accompanied by mostly cloudy skies are expected in Charleston. Mathey said the game is still expected to be played, but the final decision should come some time this morning.

“They’re another in-state school,” First baseman Mike Hochhauser said. “We’re competing with them for recruits so we want to win as many in-state games to get the best recruits.”

NIU, which had its two game series at Buffalo cancelled this past weekend, has sent an appeal to the MAC to try and make up the games when Buffalo travels to NIU on May 13 for a Tuesday doubleheader. Mathey said that the teams, if allowed, will try and play a doubleheader on Wednesday as well as Tuesday.
