NAACP works to unite NIU

“It all begins with ‘U'” was the theme of this year’s Unity Day.

The event, sponsored by the NAACP, took place Sunday at Central Park.

Organizations such as the Black Student Union and the National Pan-Hellenic Council were there with information tables. Elektra Thompson, president of E.B.O.N.Y. Women, said her organization became involved because Unity Day brings the NIU community together.

“This is our second year participating in Unity Day,” she said. “This was also a chance to show our new members the types of events we do on campus,” she said.

The deejay called to the surrounding residence halls for people to come and take part in the activity. Those in attendance were doing everything from socializing to studying for finals to doing the cha-cha slide.

This is the NAACP’s fifth year sponsoring the event.

The purpose of the event was to bring the NIU community together, said Nikkita Gardner, committee chairwoman for the event.

“We wanted to bring students together to meet new people, learn new things and to relax before finals,” she said.

Rayna Coleman, president of S.I.S.T.E.R.S., said her organization was happy to participate in Unity Day.

“This is something that brings all the organizations and students together in a positive way,” Coleman said. “It’s good to see that it doesn’t take a party to bring everyone together.”Shane Bauer photo
