Jackass

By Mike Larmon

Take a hilarious movie like “Jackass: The Movie,” add 30 minutes of extra scenes that were cut (probably for the sake of having 30 minutes of extra scenes), add two cast and crew commentaries that will have you laughing just as hard as you were during the movie and 20 minutes of outtakes from guys who barely can remember the few lines they have, and you get a four-star DVD.

That DVD is “Jackass: The Movie,” and it is the type of DVD that all others should model themselves after. Yeah, OK, so it’s not Oscar material, and it probably is an insult to the business, but whether critics like it or not, this movie is funny, and it will have people laughing for its full hour and 20 minutes. Aside from the movie, the extras are worth the price alone.

It’s a sad state of affairs when watching a grown man crap his pants is what it takes to make me laugh, but it does. In a skit where cast member Dave England is supposed to walk into a small hardware store and drop a deuce in a floor model toilet, something happens, and needless to say, he doesn’t make it to the toilet.

In another skit, cast members Johnny Knoxville and Steve-O, among others, sit around a room filled with empty beer bottles, giving each other paper cuts in between their toes and on the corners of their mouths. Disgusting? Yes. Funny? Well … actually, yeah, it is.

It’s that kind of gross-out humor that made the “Jackass” television show as popular as it was, which aided in the popularity of the movie. After you’re done watching the movie, don’t even think about getting up as there are still tons of extras to whet your whistle. Included in the 27 minutes of bonus footage is the original ending to the film, which we get a small glimpse of during the actual movie.

Never been interested in the cast and crew commentaries before? Well, now you will be. If you think these guys are funny in the movie, then you’ll love the stuff they have to say about it when they sit down and watch it together. Which skit in the film does Johnny Knoxville hate? What’s the story behind the bungee wedgie? Whose idea was the giant shopping cart opener? These questions and more will be answered for you.

There’s also some amusing outtakes, if you can believe that there actually were outtakes for this movie. It turns out that saying, “Hi, I’m Johnny Knoxville, and these are the rocket skates” is harder than it seems. While this movie probably isn’t worthy of getting four stars by itself (although I’d still give it three), the jam-packed DVD is. So if you liked the movie, and you liked the show, then why don’t you already have this in your possession?
