Tire slashers tear through DeKalb

By Rachel Helfrich

DeKalb police received reports of about 20 vehicles with slashed tires on Tuesday.

The cars were located at 1037 Spiros Court, 858 Spiros Court and 895 Pappas Drive. They all are located within a student housing area.

Sgt. Jim McDougall of the DeKalb Police Department said they have not discovered a set pattern for the vandalism.

He also said they estimate that the incidents took place sometime after 1 a.m. Tuesday. The first call came in about 10 a.m. Officers investigating the incident left notes on the vehicles they have found so far, but have not yet been in contact with all the owners.

McDougall said there are no suspects yet. He said in situations like these, there usually is more than one person involved.

Lt. Van Bomar of the DeKalb County Sheriff’s office said they have received eight reports of criminal damage to vehicles between 8:45 and 10 a.m. Tuesday. These reports were coming from similar student housing areas at Suburban Apartments and Estates. Bomar could not confirm that tires were slashed in these cases.

If anyone has any information on the case, they are encouraged to call the DeKalb Police Department at 748-8400.
