Neighborhood association helps stop drug trafficking

Two arrests were made Friday evening at 1133 Market St. thanks to help provided by members of the Pleasant Street Area Neighborhood Association.

Julio Hernandez, 42, and Jose Ruedas-Hernandez, 29, both of DeKalb were arrested on drug charges after an investigation led by the North Central Narcotics Task Force.

According to a statement released by the Task Force, the arrests came after the purchase of cocaine from the Market Street address. Ruedas-Hernandez was taken to the DeKalb County Jail after being charged with unlawful delivery of a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance. He was released Sunday after posting bond.

Hernandez was charged with two counts of delivery of a controlled substance, as well as two counts of possession of a controlled substance. According to the DeKalb County Jail, he also posted the 10 percent of the $30,000 bond set for each suspect, but is being held in jail on an Immigration and Naturalization Service detainer.

The continual traffic and rumors of drug activity have been a thorn in the side of many members of the neighborhood, who came together to solve the problem by forming the Pleasant Street Area Neighborhood Association. Members of the association worked together with police to isolate the problem and provide information in order to help the police department, and in turn the task force, with the investigation leading to these arrests.

DeKalb Police Chief Bill Feithen said his department received information indicating drug activity and alerted the task force.

“It’s very important that when they suspect that something is wrong in their neighborhood to contact the police department,” Feithen said of area residents. “They are the ones that are in these neighborhoods 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We really need the eyes and the ears of the citizens.”
